The Name Your Hood initiative strives to capture each neighbourhood's unique ethos and imagination - as the names are nominated and motivated by the public, and then decided by public vote. Following a two-week voting period, after 90 submissions and a number of votes, Green Mile was decided as the name for Neighbourhood five.
Green Mile was submitted by Inus Nigrini and is the name that received the most votes for the area at the southern end of Green Point Common - along the fan walk and adjacent to De Waterkant. The Name Your Hood initiative has the valuable support from key stakeholders such as the Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Cape Town Tourism, Cape Town Partnership, Accelerate Cape Town and Wesgro.
Nic Lamond and Bruce Good, the masterminds behind the campaign said: "Throughout history Green Point has been associated with the Green Point Common. Green Mile is a very suitable name for this hood which today continues its colourful history with the presence of the breathtaking Cape Town Stadium, the Green Point Urban Park and the Biodiversity Gardens."
The recently completed Green Point Urban Park and its Biodiversity Gardens are a particular point of pride for locals. With playgrounds, picnic areas and a garden full of indigenous flora, the park has quickly become the favourite spot for a weekend stroll. The joy that the Common once brought to the Cape's earliest inhabitants lives on in this space. A busy commercial as well as a residential area, Green Point now offers tourists and locals alike a safe, diverse and tolerant suburb.
The Name Your Hood project aims to roll out across the entire city in time. The next hood open for name submissions is Neigbourhood six which is the area between Kloof Nek Road, New Church Street, Orange Street and Camp Street. This hood will be open for submissions until 15 November, after which a shortlist of the best names and motivations will go to a public vote. The winning name for Hood six will be announced on 26 November.
