ANCYL calls for labour flexibility

The ANC Youth League says that South Africa needs a more flexible labour regime to deal with unemployment, inequality and poverty.
ANCYL calls for labour flexibility

Business Live and IOL report that the league has called on the government to manage changes to the labour environment without fundamentally altering the structure of the economy.

It blamed the government for not holding businesses in the private sector to the commitment that they would create jobs for the unemployed people and said that it was concerned about the lack of government response to the issues of unemployment, particularly among the youth.

However, ANCYL says it will continue to reject proposals for a youth wage subsidy because, it says, this does not benefit young people but rather provides a tax incentive to businesses.

It warned that the subsidy could create a situation where older, unskilled people lost their jobs in favour of the youth because of the tax advantages.
