Cut rates or else says Pule

Mobile operators may be forced to cut charges by Communication Minister Dina Pule says Business Day who points out that she has threatened to instruct the regulator to force prices down if the network operators do not make data and smartphone technology cheaper.

The mobile termination rate is to be cut again next March to about 40 cents, but Pule says this is not enough and the rates must be cut further.

South Africa's call and broadband connectivity rates are the highest in 46 African counties and are, for example, three times more than Namibia's rate.

Cell-C last month introduced an anytime rate of 99-cents a minute, billed per second and Vodacom promptly responded with its own promotional rate of 99 cents to match Cell C. MTN and 8ta have not cut call rates.
