SA's ambassador to Oman returns to post pending probe

South Africa's Ambassador to Oman, Yusuf Saloojee, is at his posting in Muscat, Oman, temporarily, pending the finalisation of an on-going investigation, says the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco).

The department recalled Saloojee and placed him on three-month suspension from 1 July 2012. This was to allow for an internal investigation into allegations made against him by a former employee of a South African mobile phone company operating in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

"The allegations are linked to Ambassador Saloojee's tenure as South Africa's Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran. The department views the allegations in a serious light, hence the investigation," Dirco added.

The department said it was unable to disclose details of the investigation at this point as the investigation was still underway.

Such disclosure may also compromise employer-employee privilege, it added.

"Ambassador Saloojee's return to Muscat is temporary, pending the finalisation and outcomes of the investigation," the department said.
