#WomensMonth: Prepare, prepare, prepare, says Nandipha Solomon

In this Covid-19 era, being able to communicate with dexterity and effectively on online platforms has become extremely important. Brand awareness is still key, and the ability to attract audiences and retain clients is integral to our success, says Nandipha Solomon, head of marketing, Citadel.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I really enjoy making a positive difference to both our internal and external clients by ensuring good communication. I find great satisfaction in raising Citadel’s brand awareness at every touchpoint.

What are the challenges facing your industry right now?

Everyone is concerned about the economy and what the “new normal” will be in a post Covid-19 world, how long remaining lockdown restrictions will remain in place, and when – or even whether – there will be a vaccine.

Describe a typical work day

Like most people who are privileged enough to have jobs, it has become even busier now that most of us are working online from home. Work is really invigorating: I need to generate ideas, discuss concepts/requests, liaise with my team and our external partners and service providers, attend meetings and address a minimum of 100 emails per day.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

Well, it’s more a case of what my grandmother wanted me to be: a doctor or a lawyer! I did get my LLB(Hons) degree but I am now a practising marketing strategist.

What is the best advice anyone has given you?

Goodness, I can’t pinpoint “the best advice ever” per se. I can only say that I always seek the best advice whenever I’m faced with a choice or challenge in life.

If you could do any other job what would it be?

I would still choose this job. I feel like I already have other “jobs” that fulfil me immensely too (mother, sister, aunt, friend).

What advice would you give to young women wanting to enter your industry?

Prepare, prepare, prepare, so that when the opportunity presents itself you can grab it with both hands. Be professional and real. Try to dig deeper to know yourself, surround yourself with people who can help you to grow. Be circumspect in all your dealings. When you make mistakes, use them as a learning opportunity and grow.

What do you do to relax?

I take long walks along the beach, listen to music, read, watch movies or a gripping series.
