The Sun Arena at Time Square in Menlyn Maine was named overall winner, ASTPM Tubular category winner, and Commercial category winner. Appointed as the structural and civil engineers for the project, the team of engineers from WSP in Africa worked closely with the entire project team from the start of the project to conceive the best structure and decide on the appropriate materials for the arena. The completed arena can accommodate 8,500 seated patrons and can be adapted to accommodate 1,300 banquet guests, or up to 18,000 delegates in a school room format – in a venue that is acoustically sound and watertight.

A greenfield project, the Shoprite Checkers Cilmor Distribution Centre received the 2018 accolades in two categories, including the Safintra Factory and Warehouse category and the Global Roofing Solutions Metal Cladding category. Spanning 123,000m², the distribution centre consolidates the activities of five different distribution centres spread across Cape Town. Construction began in February 2016 and the completed built project consisted of multiple buildings, where the main buildings comprise warehouses for drygoods and returns and a cold storage facility. As part of this project, external peripheral buildings were also constructed, namely, truck and truckwash facilities, offices, guardhouse, truck refuelling and a central generator plant.

“We are exceptionally pleased by these awards and proud of our teams and their contributions to both of these projects,” said Mathieu du Plooy, MD of WSP in Africa. “Much thought, ingenuity and collaboration – internally and with the respective clients and project teams – went into the design and construction of these projects, so as to best accommodate the various elements required on each project. We are certainly thrilled with the end-results, and I would like to congratulate our clients, the project teams and each of our experts involved in these projects, on these incredible achievements.”
