Africa Fashion Week presents Deola Sagoe

Deola Sagoe's new spring/Summer Collection will be shown for the first time in South Africa at Africa Fashion Week on 30 June at Sandton Convention Centre. The House of Deola Sagoe was established in 1989 and is currently headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria. She has been nominated for a prestigious African Fashion Award on 5 July 2010, cementing her place amongst Africa's best fashion icons.

Sagoe has chosen to launch her new range of polo shirts and premium casual-tees in Johannesburg, this year. Buyers, looking to switch labels for a truly exclusive African brand, should view the Prêt a Porter range, which has limited quantities available in only a few colours. The yarns and fabrics used for these polo's and tees were custom made for the fashion house.

An evolving brand

This brand's initial objective was to celebrate the inherent unique style and ethnic glamour found in local African fabrics and hand-woven materials, by exploring that which is genuinely African, while interpreting the continent's cultural diversity and artistry using a vibrant infusion of complex colour combinations that evoke the simplicity and elegance of the modern African women's silhouette. It has since evolved into a more international, haute couture fashion label, with a ready-to-wear sister line.

Earlier this year, she received a standing ovation from the audience at the Mercedes Benz 2010 Arise African Collective in New York for her collection, 'Regalia', a military inspired collection where the designer redefined regal attire with a regimental feel.

When asked about the influences in her clothes, she says, "I often picture the woman dancing in my clothes, and that brings its own rhythm and musical element to the creative process."
