5 things to do with the family during SA's nationwide lockdown

The Coronavirus has upturned the South African nation daily routines and for most, their travel plans. Social-distancing with families is the new normal and coupled with that, how to keep the kids occupied. Here, South African Tourism responds to the challenge of travel, without leaving your home, with these five tips:

1.Throwback to indigenous games

Go out into the backyard and teach your children the old school games that used to occupy your entire day as a child. It’s a great opportunity to go down memory lane and introduce them to Mokoko, Mogusha, Diketo or Dibeke. If you think you have a better chance at ousting your loved ones indoors, try out Morabaraba or Monopoly Mzansi, a South African take on the popular board game with familiar locations such as The Kruger Park, The V&A Waterfront, Table Mountain and Johannesburg's Maboneng and Vilakazi Street.

2. Try out some fun South African recipes

There is no better time than the present to bring out your inner Lorna Maseko or Reuben Riffel and try out some delicious home-grown recipes. And who better to assist than your little ones? After all, messy play is the best play. Download and try these recipes by our very own chefs as a start:

Mini Vanilla Cupcakes by Lorna Maseko
Pizza 101 by J'Something

3. Binge-watch South African TV series

Netflix is home to two great series with bona fide South African action heroes: Queen Sono starring Pearl Thusi and Shadow. If you have Showmax, there’s no shortage of great local and international entertainment to choose from. Should you really miss being at a big gathering, score yourself front row seats to a variety of weddings with Mzansi Magic’s Our Perfect Wedding, take it a step further and dress according to the wedding theme for extra fun.

4. Take the time out for yourself

After seeing to the kids, take some time for yourself. Dig into that book you’ve put off for months; Born a Crime by Trevor Noah, The World That Made Mandela by Luli Callinicos, and Right to Quote Myself by Khaya Dlanga, are just some of the reads currently out in the market. You can also try mindfulness exercises such as yoga or meditation – check out local choreographer Khabonina Qubeka’s KhaboYoga.

5. Plan your next getaway

Gather the family around and join the hashtag #DontCancelPostpone by planning your next getaway to one of South Africa’s family-friendly experiences. From the coastal wonders of the Cape to the Drakensberg Mountains and urban Johannesburg, there’s something for everyone to look forward to.
