Thuthuzela children treated by Africa Business News

The Thuthuzela Aid Community Centre in Sandton, Johannesburg was treated with a Christmas bash by Africa Business News (ABN360) on Sunday, 18 November, with ABN's resident Santa Clause ensuring that all 70 children in attendance received gifts and treats. The day was dedicated to food, fun and entertainment for the children.

Thuthuzela is currently home to 14 children who have been removed from parental custody for reasons such as abuse, negligence, rape and abandonment. Transport for the school-going children at the orphanage had been a major challenge. The ABN Education Trust stepped in and generously sponsored a minibus, which the house mother can now use to run the day-to-day operations of the orphanage.

"Thuthuzela is a beneficiary to the ABN Education Trust which was founded in 2011 by the co-founder and vice-chairman of CNBC Africa, Rakesh Wahi," said Nola Mashaba, head of Corporate Communications for the ABN Group.

Giving back

"This is our commitment to education, social and community development. We believe in giving back, adding value, and growing communities we operate in, with our intention to grant the children an equal opportunity through a sustainable foundation. These are our future leaders and we want to play a part in developing them into becoming functional community members. We give them hope for a brighter future," she said.

The ABN Group is currently in the process of acquiring a home of safety for the children as the building they currently occupy was initially meant to be a temporary shelter. The ABN Education Trust, the Academy for Financial Journalist's and the Thuthuzela Aid Community Centre, in partnership with CNBC Africa and Forbes Africa reinforce their goal to develop and provide a great foundation specifically for the previously disadvantaged communities.
