SABC board back in the spotlight

NEWSWATCH: SABC board member Bheki Khumalo is once again the centre of debate after the recent announcement that he will be acting spokesperson for the Department of Minerals and Energy for the short term, writes IOL, which also reports that the SABC and Johannesburg City Power have entered into an agreement which exempts the public broadcaster from load shedding.

A source told The Saturday Star that "[t]he SABC is an essential service such as Joburg's four government hospitals and Rand Water, and is regarded as an institution of national importance that cannot be switched off."

Meanwhile, FIFA has formally demanded a retraction from a British newspaper concerning a column claiming that the soccer body had been forced to build a multi-billion rand contingency fund in case the 2010 FIFA World Cup collapses. According to IOL, “FIFA spokesperson Andreas Herren said FIFA was obliged in terms of its own statutes to build reserves.”
