New stamps commemorate South African symbols

On Friday 20 April 2012, the South African Post Office released a new set of stamps that celebrate South Africa's national symbols reflected in its fauna and flora, cultures and people. Illustrated by Lize-Marie Dreyer, a third-year student at the Open Window School of Visual Communication, the symbols appear on a set of eight stamps and two first-day covers.

Dreyer says she made the illustrations using the symbols as a medium. "For instance, the illustration of the protea is made up of tiny proteas." Dreyer adds that she enjoyed the creative process and is thrilled by the idea of her designs travelling South Africa in the form of postage stamps.

The stamps include the national anthem, flag and coat of arms, the springbok, the blue crane, the king protea, galjoen and the yellowwood tree.

The stamps cost R2.65 each and can ordered online at www.virtualpostoffice.co.za.
