It is with great pleasure that I bring you the last newsletter for 2011. What a year it has been! In August I was appointed to bring you industry related news from across Africa and I can say it's been a fairly smooth couple of months in the driver's seat.
Here they are, 
In a four-way pitch against Ballito in KwaZulu-Natal, Johannesburg and Sun City, Cape Town has emerged triumphant to retain The Loerie Awards in the Mother City. The Loeries Judging Week and Seminars will also move from Johannesburg to Cape Town, so that judging will take place during Creative Week in the days leading up to the awards ceremonies. 
Scrutinize, an innovative campaign that got young people to "scrutinize" their behaviours and take action to reduce their risk of HIV infection, has won the 5th Annual AfriComNet Award in the Best Multichannel category. 
MapIT, an enabler of digital mapping technologies in South Africa and Africa, is now offering African based businesses and consumers a Web Mapping API. The tool has gained popularity and has established a loyal community of users. 
Nominees for the 2011 Lorenzo Natali Prize for Journalism have been announced by the European Commission (EC). Ghanaian journalist, 
Airtel Africa has announced a two-year strategic partnership with global mobile manufacturer, Samsung. The partnership is set to improve both Airtel's and Samsung's brand equity, their distribution infrastructure, expand its African footprint and drive penetration in Africa to achieve common goals. 
YouTube, the platform where anyone with a video camera and an internet connection can share their life, art and voice with the world, has announced the launch of YouTube in Nigeria and will be offering the most relevant content. 
Apex Communications Limited, a communications consultancy firm based in Kenya, has become a network partner of public relations firm Porter Novelli and will from now on be known as Apex Porter Novelli. 
Airtel Africa today launched a thematic television commercial for its year-end promotion, called 'Airtel Friendzy', which uses music as a tool to forge a strong bond between the brand and the youth. [video] 
LONDON, UK: National Geographic Channels International has appointed Hamish Mykura as executive vice president & head of international content. Mykura will also serve dual role as the London head of global development for NGC. The announcement was made by Hernan Lopez, chief executive officer of NGCI & Fox International Channels. 
LONDON, UK: BBC Worldwide has announced the inclusion of several of its series' and episodes' in Apple's iTunes Rewind 2011, an official retrospective of the best and top-selling music, applications, TV shows, movies books and podcasts of the year.

[Eugene Yiga] Around 15 000 people are expected to attend the 15th annual Obs Arts Festival from Friday 9th to Sunday 11th December. It all takes place at the Observatory Village Green and surrounding roads and venues in Observatory, Cape Town.
