In order to ensure the health, safety and security of students and staff, Damelin Bloemfontein held a workshop that specifically focused on training and equipping individuals in these three key areas.

The objective of the workshop was to inform students and staff of the building’s exit points, in the case of an emergency. In addition, staff were trained in basic response skills and knowledge that will assist them in the case of medical emergencies. This included basic training on how to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

The health and safety, as well as the fire drill demonstrations were rolled out over four days, allocating two days each to focus on health as well as fire and safety drills respectively. The teams were taught the theoretic part of performing CPR first and the followed by a practical demonstration. They then wrote a test to examine if they had grasped what they were taught in the workshop.

The fire drill was another element to the workshop where Damelin students and staff learnt what to do should a fire break out.

“Safety regulations for organisations are enforced by law and the exercises have to be done three times a year. We have to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff,” said Hassen Ally, Group Facilities Manager for Educor, the holding company for Damelin.

According to the Health and Safety Act of South Africa, the protection of everyone other than persons at work against hazards to health arising out of or in connection is an obligation.

Damelin is a leading private education provider in South Africa and committed to promoting safety and security for all.
