Innovation must be actively supported in Africa - 11 Jun 2018

[Louise Marsland] The Africa Innovation Summit took place in Kigali, Rwanda last week, for the second year running. Delegates concluded that the will and talent for African innovation is there, but needs to be actively supported by business and government in order to flourish. The message from innovators at the five-day conference and exhibition, was that, "Africans must throw out the boxes that have caged them". read more

Marking Africa Day - 21 May 2018

Purpose before profit - 14 May 2018

[Louise Marsland] At an innovation conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, recently, brand purpose was debated and the need for purpose-driven brands in Africa to create sustainable change and help Governments meet the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) towards Agenda 2030, was reiterated. Brian Tjugum, managing director for Weber Shandwick's EMEA Social Impact practice, told Bizcommunity.Africa that brand purpose should be at the top of all brand and communications strategy, as well as business strategy. "We believe that purpose and purpose-shaped business strategies are there to shape and change the world. Through storytelling we are creating tangible impact as through storytelling we inspire and engage others." Communications growth in Africa - 23 Apr 2018

[Louise Marsland] The annual industry public relations awards, the #Prisms2018, were held in South Africa over the weekend showcasing award-winning communications campaigns. In the public relations special around the awards, Robyn de Villiers, chairman and CEO of Burson-Marsteller: Africa, shared an address with Bizcommunity.com that she made at the House of Lords in the United Kingdom, about the opportunities for growth for brands in Africa. She recounted six reasons why the communciations industry would grow with Africa: "The dawning of the digital age in Africa provides brands with opportunities for more creative, direct and daring ways of engaging." In an interview with Ciclope director, Francisco Condorelli, on the recent #CiclopeAfrica festival, held on the African continent for the first time, he emphasised how important it was for Africa's craft work to be highlighted around the world as, "the world is interested in the amazing work being produced here in Africa". The economic indicators for Africa - 16 Apr 2018

[Louise Marsland] The chairman of global communications firm, Weber Shandwick, Jack Leslie, believes all the right economic indicators and portents are present for the continent of Africa to truly rise. Leslie, who has also served on the United States African Development Foundation for two decades as an advisor to several Presidents, told Bizcommunity.Africa about the "huge sense of optimism around Africa". He says Africa's entrepreneurial culture, which leads rankings globally, signifies great things for the continent as technological and other developments continue at a fast pace and the rising middle class promises access to a "fast-growing market". The first thing I asked the group - ranging from small business startups and micro-enterprises, to medium sized businesses, was: "What are the first words that spring to mind when you think about the African continent?" [Louise Marsland] There's just one week left to enter the Ciclope Africa craft festival - the first time that the international craft and production festival has a regional Africa leg, ahead of the main event in Berlin, Germany in November 2018. The Ciclope Africa awards and event will be held at the Zeitz MOCCA Museum of Contemporary Art in Cape Town, South Africa, on 10 April 2018 to showcase Africa's production talent. read more

Africa on the Agenda - 12 Mar 2018

[Louise Marsland] Africa is on the agenda in London this week at the Commonwealth Africa Summit 2018 #CAS2018. Issues to be discussed include climate change, youth political participation, the economy and security, trade and investment, entrepreneurship and job creation, economic development, energy and power, and other relevant issues in Africa. The African Development Bank and its East and North African Governors recently met and have also issued a warning regarding the high youth unemployment that Africa faces in the future as its population increases. read more

Investing in Africa - 5 Mar 2018

[Louise Marsland] Continuing on the theme of "Afrofuturism" that we highlighted last week and hope in the continent's future, investment in Africa is continuing apace, with expansion by both local companies on the continent and global entities. First up was Kenya's mSurvey, which expanded its consumer research platform into Nigeria; followed by Burson-Marsteller Africa which has expanded its reputation management service and tools in Africa, by partnering with Reputation Matters from South Africa. It was a brilliant week for African film, as six African films were up for Oscars this year. South Africa's Triggerfish was at the Oscars to support its Academy Awards-nominated film, Revolting Rhymes. read more
